Just over three years ago, the Portland Business Journal launched Sustainable Business Oregon as a way to catalyze and cover the emerging sustainable business sector across the state. I've been honored to be a part of that effort.
The morning this website went live in January 2010, Associate Editor Mason Walker and I came in the office early and brewed a special pot of better-than-office coffee. We double-checked all the links — the site's community calendar, its jobs board, its resource listings and of course its first news stories — and waited for our corporate partners at Bizjournals in Charlotte to flip the "on" switch.
It's been an amazing ride.
Sustainable Business Oregon has given voice to the issues of interest and concern to anyone operating at the intersection of sustainability and business. We've covered the booms and busts of renewable energy, monitored the pulse of policy makers in Salem and Washington. We've elevated the best practices of the state's most exemplary businesses through the Innovation in Sustainability Awards. And, perhaps our best achievement, we've created a forum for the exchange of ideas — hundreds of members of the business community have contributed to our Voices from Sustainable Business blog, raising their own issues and sometimes even breaking their own news.
There is considerable momentum in Oregon for socially responsible business, benefit corporations, impact investing and innovative models for creating companies that truly support the triple bottom line of social, environmental and economic sustainability. These businesses will be leaders in the economy that emerges as the factors that contribute to a changing climate find their way onto the corporate balance sheet — a process that's already started —and as a new generation of businesspeople demand social equity as a matter of course.
