Tchavdar "Chevy" Marinov is a master welder at Zen Bicycle Fabrication. He's been in the business for 16 years.

Zen Bicycle Fabrication opened its doors in Portland three months ago, bringing together a team of bike building experts at a time that happened to coincide with the region's largest bike fabricator closing its doors.

The result? Some pretty brisk growth for Zen.

Portland Business Journal's Erik Siemers took a close look at Zen's business, which works with a variety of bike companies to build prototypes and produce custom models.

Zen plays it close to the vest, keeping designs under wraps and visitors off the production floor.

"The chance of us getting conflicting brands in here is 90 percent,” is how co-founder David Woronets puts it.

But Cathy Cheney, the Business Journal's staff photographer, spent some time at Zen and brings back this photo report about the bike fabrication process.
