U.S. production of advanced biofuels jumped from 437 million gallons last year to 685 million gallons so far this year.

Production of advanced biofuels has climbed nearly 57 percent this year, generating a large enough supply to meet the needs of Oregon's Clean Fuel Standard, according to a report released Wednesday by E2 Environmental Entrepreneurs.

E2, a New York-based independent environmental business advocacy group, said U.S. production of advanced biofuels jumped from 437 million gallons last year to 685 million gallons so far this year.

The Oregon Legislature in 2009 passed the state's Clean Fuel Standard, which requires that the state’s transportation fuel sources be 10 percent cleaner in 10 years — a goal that can be reached through any combination of electric vehicles and alternative fuels being put to work.

Chris Dennett, a Portland-based director of E2's Northwest chapter, said the increased production shows the nation's biofuel industry has an adequate supply from proven technology to meet the state's standards.

Other findings from the report:

  • The advanced biofuels industry by 2015 will have the capacity to produce between1.6 billion and 2.6 billion gallons of low-carbon fuel by 2015 if state standards in Oregon and California and the federal Renewable Fuels Standard stay on the books.
  • The clean fuel standards could spark the creation of at least 27 new biofuels refineries across the U.S. by 2015. There are 165 biofuels producers in the U.S. today, including several in Oregon.
  • Between 18,407 and 47,700 new jobs could be created nationwide from biofuels industry growth if the state and federal standards are implemented as planned.
