New San Francisco building called country's greenest
San Francisco's new Public Utilities Commission building, touted by city officials as the “greenest building in the U.S.,” is almost ready for use.
The 13-story structure cost $201.6 million and will house more than 900 of the agency’s employees. Grand opening celebrations start on Wednesday at 525 Golden Ave.
For a public agency, this hefty price tag may seem extravagant, but PUC officials say the building will more than pay for itself in energy and water savings. By year 26, the building becomes more cost effective to own and operate rather than to lease.
“This is very much the fiscally responsible thing do,” said PUC spokesman Charles Sheehan.
- Wind turbines and solar panels that will provide 7 percent to 8 percent of the building’s energy needs.
- A grey water system that will cover 100 percent of the building’s water needs.
- An integrated building system that manages and controls the energy efficiency of the building.
