Pacific cod set for sustainable certification

The Marine Stewardship Council is set to issue Alaska's multimillion dollar Pacific cod fisheries a MSC certification by mid-January, a move that would make the white fish much more attractive in a variety of markets, especially Europe where the council is based.

Seafood trade organizations estimate the certification could fetch prices that are as much as 5 percent higher than non-certified fish. The certification is also important for sales to retail change including Whole Foods and Wal-Mart that have made commitments to stocking sustainably harvested seafood.
