Cost concerns may hinder LEED growth (Kansas City)
Statistics don’t yet reveal a recession-driven downturn in demand for green building certifications, but anecdotes suggest weakened interest in proving that buildings are energy efficient.
“How do you justify spending the additional money?” said Bob Courtney, energy manager for the Olathe School District. “I’m not sure I can justify going for an award.”
Hiring third-party experts for past certifications has added about one-half percent to 1 percent to school buildings’ construction cost, Courtney said, and the national average is 2 percent to 3 percent.
