Georgia wants refund from Yucca Mountain waste (Atlanta)

With the federal government abandoning plans to bury America’s nuclear waste beneath the Nevada desert, the Georgia Public Service Commission sees no reason electric customers should keep paying for it.

The PSC unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday calling for Georgia rate payers to stop paying into the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Fund, which is being used to develop a permanent underground repository for nuclear waste.

The resolution, introduced by Commissioner Bobby Baker, also asks for the return of more than $1.1 billion Georgians have paid into the fund since its inception in 1982.
