North Carolina utilities seek swine-waste power

North Carolina's major utilities and other power suppliers have asked for bids to sell electricity generated from swine waste for distribution in the state.

Raleigh-based Progress Energy (NYSE: PGN) will administer the request for proposals on behalf of itself, Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK), Dominion Energy, and several electric cooperatives and municipal power companies.

Progress asks renewable-energy producers to bid on the contracts by April 15. It expects to narrow the field, if necessary, to a short list for negotiations by July 1. Progress expects to award contracts by Oct. 1.

Contracts to purchase power made from swine waste will help the utilities meet state requirements that they sell some electricity made from renewable resources.
