Phase one of Hudson River dredging a success (Albany)
The first phase of dredging the upper Hudson River has been successful, says the New York Department of Environmental Conversation in a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The DEC said the dredging being conducted by General Electric Co. under an agreement with the EPA, said changes will need to be made to improve the containment and removal of PCB-oil sheens on the water surface, among other aspects of the project. But overall, the DEC said the work done in the first phase will result in long-term benefits for the communities along the river.
Contractors and crews began dredging contaminated sediment from the Hudson River in Fort Edward in May in what has been estimated as a six-year, $750-million river cleanup.
