Solar districts proposed in Ohio (Columbus)

A financing tool used by communities to fund street and public improvements could soon be employed to boost green energy projects in Ohio.

State Sen. Jimmy Stewart, R-Albany, has introduced a bill that would expand the state’s fledgling law that allows municipalities to create special improvement districts to help businesses and homeowners finance solar energy projects through assessments on their property tax bills.

Senate Bill 223 would allow communities to create SIDs for weatherization projects and wind, geothermal and other alterative energy initiatives. It would also enable them to establish revolving loan funds, with a portion of loan repayments by property owners going to finance the next set of alternative energy projects.
