Tennessee biofuel plant turns grass into gas (Nashville)

A small-scale experimental biofuel plant has begun producing ethanol in eastern Tennessee, about a year and a half after it was announced by Gov. Phil Bredesen.

The plant in Vonore is one of the first in the world capable of producing ethanol from non-edible plant materials. The 74,000-square-foot, $50 million plant is currently using corn cobs and switchgrass to produce fuel. It is only expected to produce 250,000 gallons of ethanol a year. Its primary purpose is to serve as a laboratory for new technologies that could be used in large scale production.
