First net-zero school coming to Kentucky

Warren County Kentucky is building the first net-zero energy school in the country. Richardsville Elementary School will operate off the grid, thanks to solar power and a heavy emphasis on energy efficiency.

The architects on the project, Sherman-Carter-Barnhart, PSC, describe thin-film solar technology, the use of light shelves for lighting, insulated concrete walls and a geothermal HVAC.

Because this is a school and not just any building, reports EcoGeek, all of these features will be used as educational tools.

The school's website features a camera trained on the construction site. The school is scheduled to open to students in the fall.
