Flexible work time helps sustainability (Honolulu)
Every other Friday, Honolulu architecture firm Philip K. White & Associates closes its offices on South School Street.
The move is part of a flexible work plan launched last October that the firm refers to as a “9/80” schedule. Employees work nine-hour days starting at 7 a.m., Monday through Friday, but get every other Friday off, while still hitting their 80 hours for each pay period.
“It really helps all around — helps with traffic, family obligations, personal appointments, and even energy savings for the office,” said Vice President Terine Higa, who implemented the plan. “We committed to try it out for a year, and so far it’s working out well.”
President Philip “Pip” White, who founded the firm in 1983, said the 9/80 schedule allows its eight employees to have a jump-start on the workday by starting an hour earlier. The earlier start time also helps employees shave time off their morning commutes by avoiding peak traffic hours.
