Low snow pack hurts Seattle City Light

Snowpack that’s only 75 percent of normal in Washington state means that Seattle City Light will get hurt in the pocketbook.

Officials at the utility said they’ll have enough power for their own customers this summer but won’t be able to sell much surplus power to other utilities, which could affect Seattle City Light’s bottom line by about $70 million. That’s about a 50 percent reduction in expected surplus power sales this year.

The snowpack statewide is about 75 percent of normal at this time, with the most severe shortfalls on the east side of the Cascades and in the water catchment areas of the Columbia River.

Bonneville Power Administration reported a similar issue in February.
