Port embraces solar power (Sacramento)

The Port of West Sacramento now is powered mostly by the sun, thanks to a new 637-kilowatt photovoltaic system installed by Pacific Power Management LLC.

The system, installed on the roofs of two rice warehouses, will meet about 95 percent of the port’s energy needs, port manager Mike Luken said. The installation was approved in early 2008 and wrapped up March 1.

“The electricity that we generate offsets electricity that (the port) would (normally) purchase from the utility company,” said Kelly McMahon, vice president of business development for Pacific Power Management in Auburn.

Only Pan Pacific Cement, which has its own power feed, will continue to get its electricity from the grid, Luken said.

The project is expected to save the cash-strapped port $20,000 in the first year.
