Redwood Systems networks LEDs for a brighter future (Silicon Valley)

Redwood Systems Inc. has developed a way to add smart controls to LED lighting, technology that offers huge energy savings in buildings along with several other advantages.

The Fremont company has raised $12 million in Series A funding from Battery Ventures โ€” which has offices in Silicon Valley, Boston and Israel โ€” as well as U.S. Venture Partners of Menlo Park.

The technology involved gives a window into a very different future for lighting. Founded by two former executives at Cisco Systems Inc., Redwood Systems has taken a networking approach to LED (light emitting diode) systems in buildings. LED lighting, which uses a semiconductor light source, is seen by many experts as a possible energy-saving alternative to even fluorescent bulbs.
