Seattle City Light company towns to get energy upgrades

Seattle City Light, which owns two towns on the Skagit River, said it will install energy saving devices at 34 homes and up to 24 buildings in Newhalem and Diablo near the utility’s dams.

The buildings — some as old as 80 years —house employees who work on the three dams that provide about a quarter of Seattle’s total power. The area is located on U.S. 20 at the edge of the North Cascades National Park, near the Canadian border in Whatcom County.

According to Seattle City Light, once the project is done in several years, the improvements can save 2.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. The utility added that Newhalem and Diablo might be the only two municipally owned company towns in the country, and the buildings are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
