Florida launches new solar plant
Florida Power & Light Co. launched its new solar power plant near the Kennedy Space Center on Thursday.
Dubbed the Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Center, the 10-megawatt plant is the second-largest solar facility FPL has completed in Florida.
The first, the DeSoto County Next Generation Solar Energy Center, is the country's largest solar photovoltaic facility, at 25 megawatts.
The new solar plants were among three that were approved in July 2008 by the Florida Public Service Commission.
The new facility is located on NASA property and is already producing an estimated 10 megawatts of clean, emissions-free power, which is enough energy to serve approximately 1,100 homes, FPL said in a news release.
