Starbucks notes 'barriers' to recycling (Seattle)
Starbucks Corp. said it’s facing challenges to one of its goals of making sure that 100 percent of its cups are recyclable or reusable in the next five years.
In its 2009 “global responsibility report,” the Seattle coffee giant (NASDAQ: SBUX) said that “it encountered several barriers” to its recycling goals, due to “a variance in local recycling capabilities.” Starbucks said it will convene its second annual “cup summit” in Boston next week with municipalities, cup makers, recyclers and “academic experts” to discuss its cup-recycling goals.
Starbucks also said it’s started a new program to encourage people to use their own tumblers instead of a paper cup. Last year, Starbucks said it served 26 million beverages in reusable cups, which saved 1.2 million pounds of paper.
