Tacoma targets water technology

In the Northwest’s push for environmental stardom, green energy and green building often hog the spotlight.

But an ambitious project rising in Tacoma shows off the potential of a less heralded environmental sector — water.

Tacoma intends to clean up Puget Sound — and grab its share of green jobs in the process through an environmentally friendly building complex devoted to clean water that’s nearing completion on the Thea Foss Waterway.

When the three-story Center for Urban Waters opens in June, it will house an environmental services and research lab, environmental compliance officers and the Puget Sound Partnership, a state agency charged with cleaning up Puget Sound.
