Valence Tech powering London's electric taxis (Austin)
Valence Technology Inc. is providing energy storage systems to a consortium designing electric taxis for London.
The Austin-based company signed an agreement to supply lithium phosphate batteries to a new line of tailpipe-free, plug-in Mercedes. The prototype is begin designed as part of London Mayor Boris Johnson's zero-pollution goal.
Valence was likely helped in the deal by current arrangements with double-decker hybrid bus builders already using the batteries in London.
"The eVito Taxi is a logical next step for the city, and Valence is ready to immediately fulfill Mercedes' high volume energy storage needs," Valence President and CEO Robert L. Kanode said.
The taxis are being tested and developers hope to have them ready to roll in time for the 2012 London Olympics. The consortium includes Mercedes-Benz UK and Zytek Automotive Technology.
