Zipcar buys UK's Streetcar (Boston)

Zipcar Inc., the car-sharing service creator, has acquired U.K. car club Streetcar. As part of the deal, Streetcar founders and executives will hold onto leadership roles, operating under the Zipcar brand.

The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The acquisition gives Cambridge-based Zipcar a solid base to grow its car-sharing network in Europe. Scott Griffith, Zipcar CEO and 2009 Mass High Tech All Star, said in a press release, “more than 400,000 members of both companies will benefit from more cars, more convenience and enhanced technology.”

Streetcar was launched in 2004 in the U.K., with locations in eight cities and 1,100 locations.

Zipcar merged with Seattle-based FlexCar in 2007.
