California offers $20M in clean-tech training grants

A $20 million program to train workers for jobs in cleantech industries was announced Wednesday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Green Innovation Challenge Grant program was unveiled by the governor as he joined President Barack Obama at the Solyndra Inc. solar power equipment plant in Fremont.

The funds will provide as many as five challenge grants at up to $4 million each to encourage business-led partnerships to develop and implement new training to prepare workers for jobs in a broad range of clean technologies.

It will be run by the California Employment Development Department.

The industries that get grants must target one of the following goals: renewable energy generation, energy efficiency in buildings, alternative and renewable fuels and vehicles including associated components, energy storage and water efficiency.

"California is already seeing green job growth but we must continue working to accelerate this trend. These challenge grants will encourage innovative green companies to train and hire Californians to further our state's leadership in the green economy," said Gov. Schwarzenegger.
