Dell computer packaging now compostable (Austin)

Dell Inc.'s bamboo-based computer packaging material was recently certified compostable, officials said today.

The Round Rock-based computer maker was granted American Society for Testing and Materials certification for its packing material, validating that it is biodegradable and will break down in an active compost pile. The mechanically-pulped bamboo is harvested from a Forest Stewardship Council-certified forest in China and can be used to grow plants once broken down.

The company, which employs 16,000 in Central Texas, began using bamboo-based packing material for its Mini 10 and Mini 10v netbooks in November 2009, but it recently extended the line to include other computers and products.

TreeHugger.com raises the question if bamboo is the best source for the packaging.
