Google invests $39M in North Dakota wind farms
Search and advertising giant Google Inc. invested $38.8 million into two North Dakota wind farms.
Mountain View-based Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) said Monday that this was its first direct investment in a “utility-scale renewable energy project.”
The two wind farms generate 169.5 megawatts of power, which is enough for about 55,000 homes. They also use power lines that already exist, thus avoiding an infrastructure problem that has ruined other big wind projects.
Google has also invested in energy startups like eSolar Inc. and AltaRock Energy Inc. But it wants to invest some of its formidable capital resources in bigger “utility-scale” projects, too.
