Hawaii public schools to get solar power

The Hawaii Department of Education has awarded its first solar power contract to Hawaii Pacific Solar LLC.

The contract is part of the D.O.E.’s two-year plan to bring solar power to the state’s public schools.

“Utilizing renewable-energy sources to reduce the cost of school operations is a top priority for the D.O.E.,” said Randy Moore, assistant superintendent of the Office of School Facilities and Support Services.

Hawaii Pacific Solar will install solar panels free of charge at Kaimuki High School, Aiea High School, Waianae High School and Kahuku High and Intermediate Schools. The agreement also allows third parties to own and operate photovoltaic systems on a building or on land owned by an independent entity.
