BP's oil spill price tag: $350M and counting (Houston)
BP plc on Monday revealed that it has spent $350 million so far in efforts to clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill as it continues to try new methods to contain it.
The estimated amount of oil that has leaked since the spill started 19 days ago is about 95,000 barrels, a figure based on the 5,000 barrels of oil per day the U.S. Coast Guard estimated that are leaking.
The Deepwater Horizon rig, owned by Transocean Ltd. (NYSE: RIG), exploded on April 20, killing 11 workers. The rig sank two days later.
On May 5, crews managed to stop the flow of oil from one of three leaks from the Deepwater Horizon accident.
Oil from the rig in the Gulf of Mexico washed ashore on barrier islands near Louisiana for the first time on May 6.
