Solar industry grapples with potential slowdown (Phoenix)
The solar installation market is starting to cool as a result of the recent cutbacks in incentives offered by Phoenix-area utilities.
Arizona Public Service Co. and Salt River Project both decreased their incentives after a flood of applications used up the money they had allotted to bring down the cost of residential solar systems.
“It’s not slowing down today, but there sure as heck are some signs that it’s coming,” said John Casey, CEO of Green Fuel Technologies in Phoenix.
APS officials have not seen a drop in the number of applications received since the Arizona Corporation Commission approved the lower incentive rate of $2.15 per installed watt, a decrease of about 30 percent. The utility still is seeing about 110 applications for incentives each week, said Steven Gotfried, a company spokesman.
