Wave-powered water plant gets green light in Texas
Houston's Texas Natural Resources LLC has been tapped to operate a planned commercial wave-powered desalination facility near Freeport that will ultimately produce the world's first 100 percent fossil-fuel-free, desalinated drinking water.
Renew Blue Inc. received a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit to install the facility, which will house a Seadog pump system built by Renew Blue's parent, Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Independent Natural Resources Inc.
Renew Blue is incorporated in Texas, but has its headquarters with its parent company.
The Seadog pumps will generate electricity from ocean waves, using some of it to extract fresh water from the sea for municipal use.
"This is the first Section 10 Permit issued to demonstrate a commercial wave energy facility in the history of the United States," said Douglas Sandberg, vice president for Independent Natural Resources.
Last October, Renew Blue received the first-ever state offshore wave energy lease from the Texas General Land Office for construction of the facility.
