Xcel to buy wind power from Colorado BP plant

Xcel Energy's Colorado unit will buy all the power to be produced by a new Weld County wind farm planned by BP.

The 25-year agreement calls for Xcel's Public Service Co. of Colorado to buy 250 megawatts of power from BP Wind Energy's Cedar Creek II plant.

The wind farm is planned for a site about 20 miles north of New Raymer in Weld County, east of the existing 300.5 MW Cedar Creek I wind farm.

BP expects that the construction project, set to begin this summer, will employ some 250 people and that 12 to 14 workers will work there once it is completed. BP did not announce a date the plant will be operational.

GE and Nordex wind turbines will be used at the wind farm, and about 20 miles of overhead transmission lines will connect the facility to the power grid.
