Duke Energy, Cisco Systems sign deal to bring smart grid into homes
Duke Energy and Cisco Systems have signed a deal to develop a tool to help home owners reduce energy waste.
Charlotte-based Duke (NYSE: DUK) is testing the first generation Home Energy Management Solution with customers in Charlotte and Cincinnati, where the utility has installed digital smart grid technology. The Home Energy Management Solution was developed by Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO).
“Customers want to save money on their energy bills, but it has to be easy. With Cisco’s proven expertise in Internet Protocol-based, open system networks, we’re confident our collaboration with them will result in a solution that provides customers back-of-mind simplicity and real back pocket rewards,” said Gianna Manes, Duke’s senior vice president and chief customer officer.
The two companies also plan to work with home products manufacturers to develop appliances and other electricity-using items that connect with the management system.
