Florida County turns to PACE for green job growth
The search for jobs in Broward County is leading to the same solutions found in Sonoma County, Calif., and a new form of funding green energy improvements: property-assessed clean energy (PACE).
The trend is no surprise. According to a local attorney who consulted with Sonoma, the county has given $24 million to 770 property owners who are buying better windows and insulation, and more efficient appliances.
“Sonoma has seen an 8 percent increase in construction activity, and they attribute that to the new PACE program,” said the attorney, Paul D’Arelli of Berger Singerman in Miami.
Similar to Sonoma’s solution, the PACE program could be Broward’s answer to a rising dilemma: incentivizing green jobs at the same rate that the government is throwing money at job training for green jobs. A task force of the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward Alliance, WorkForce One Employment Solutions and Citigroup released a study June 21, endorsing PACE in Broward County.
