N.C. renewable projects gain funds

Eighteen locations in North Carolina will share $2.3 million in federal funds for renewable-energy measures.

Among the projects approved for funding in the Charlotte region:

  • •Charlotte will receive $38,042 for a solar-power installation on the parking deck of the government center.
  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will get $24,719 for a solar thermal system at J.V. Washam Elementary in Cornelius.
  • FLS Energy will receive $143,054 for solar installations at the Beatties Ford and Hickory Branch libraries.
  • •The landfill in the Gaston County community of Dallas will use $200,000 to complete a gas-to-energy project to collect methane.
  • Patrick Yarn Mill in Cleveland County will install a 100-kilowatt photovoltaic solar system on the roof of its Clevemont plant and corporate office in Kings Mountain. Stimulus money will cover $154,108 of the project’s $616,432 cost.
  • The Schiele Museum in Gastonia will receive $60,000 for solar systems.
  • Shoe Show in Concord will get $200,000 for a solar project on its roof.

“These projects help build our state’s green-energy economy, create jobs and demonstrate how public and private partnerships can work to help our communities,” says N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue.
