Public Utilities Commission approves plan to test biofuels (Honolulu)

The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission approved a plan, proposed by Hawaiian Electric Co., to test various blends of biofuels in a steam turbine unit at the Kahe Power Plant.

The power plant currently runs on low sulfur fuel oil, and PUC accepted the $4.7 million budget to get new pumps, motors and other equipment to make the alternative fuel transition, according to the HEC Tuesday.
