Study: No support for offshore oil ban (Houston)

Despite the Gulf spill, Americans across the political spectrum aren’t ready to ban offshore drilling outright, researchers at Rice University said Wednesday.

Participants in a nationwide survey conducted by the university rated the idea of a drilling ban on a one-to-ten scale, where 10 indicated complete support.

Republican ratings on a drilling ban averaged 3.3, Democrats 5.8 and Independents 5.3.

“People are recognizing business is a key driver of economic and societal progress,” said Vikas Mittal, co-author of the study and professor of marketing at Rice’s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business. “They understand the best way is not to block the economic process of running a business, but to expect companies and their CEOs to create shareholder wealth while being socially responsible.”

The survey — conducted among 522 people — also showed that most Americans felt businesses needed to be more socially responsible.
