Cantwell: Oil industry has failed to prepare

The oil industry has “failed” in preparing for oil spills and preventing oil-related disasters, so U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell said she’s going to introduce tougher oil-drilling legislation to “protect Puget Sound” and American coastal waters.

The Washington state Democrat said she’s working to pass a Senate bill that would “significantly enhance oil spill response and prevention, improve offshore oil drilling safety, and protect coastal communities.” She also has introduced legislation to permanently ban oil drilling off the Pacific Coast.

“America cannot rely on big oil companies and their CEOs to utilize the best available prevention and response technology,” Cantwell said in a statement.
