Duke Energy: Renewables are 'niche' power source

Duke Energy executive Jim Turner warned a national meeting of utility regulators Monday that renewable energy needs to be thought of as a niche source of electricity, reports SNL Energy.

Utilities will still need nuclear, natural gas and even coal to provide the base load for 24-hour electric service, he told the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners in their meeting in Sacramento, Calif. Solar and wind, the clean renewables of choice for many, cannot deliver that, he said.

"It doesn't matter how clean it is if it's not affordable or reliable," he said.

Regarding smart meters, Turner said: "Regulators are justifiably concerned about … whether there's really enough 'there' there. On the other side, I think it's incumbent upon us as utilities … to demonstrate what that value is."
