First Wind gets $117M loan guarantee for project in Hawaii

First Wind Holdings Inc. has received a $117 million federal loan guarantee for a wind power project in Hawaii, the U.S. Department of Energy announced Tuesday.

A subsidiary of the Boston-based developer, Kahuku Wind Power received the loan guarantee to build and operate the 30-megawatt Kahuku Wind Power project, the DOE said. The project is expected to supply electricity for 7,700 homes and create more than 200 jobs.

In May, the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission approved a power purchase agreement between the project and the Hawaiian Electric Company.

First Wind previously built and currently operates Hawaii’s largest wind energy facility, the 30-megawatt Kaheawa Wind project in Maui.
