Smart grid washing machine debuts (Austin)

An Italian appliances manufacturer is preparing to market a smart grid washing machine using Freescale Semiconductor Inc. technology.

The Indesit Co. debuted the Smart Washer during the Freescale Technology Forum in June. The machine, which uses the Austin company's ZigBee node, can regulate its energy use based on cost and green power availability. The Freescale chip is used to gather price and electricity information from the utility provider via the Internet.

Freescale develops embedded semiconductors and employs about 19,500 workers nationally, including 5,000 in Austin. It was founded in 2004 as a spinoff from the Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT).

Freescale reported a $538 million net loss on $1.1 billion in total sales in the second quarter ended July 2, compared with a $484 million negative on $824 million revenue the same three months last year.

Earlier this year, Freescale officials confirmed that more than half of its nearly 1 million-square-foot campus in North Austin is available for lease.
