Tyco unit opens $25M nuclear testing facility (Boston)

Tyco Flow Control, a unit of Tyco International Ltd. focused on valves and controls for water and environmental systems, today opened a $25 million Advanced Nuclear Testing & Development Facility in Mansfield.

According to officials at Tyco Flow, the new facility is intended to “help meet the world’s growing nuclear power generation needs,” and is one of the largest testing facilities of its type in the world. The facility covers 118,000 square feet, in which nuclear design and engineering firms can develop and test critical safety-related valves and controls used by large-scale reactors.

With more than 300 locations worldwide, Tyco Flow Control has more than 15,000 employees. Among its customers in the nuclear power field are some of the industry’s largest nuclear reactor manufacturers, including AREVA and Westinghouse, according to officials.

Tyco Flow’s parent, Tyco International, is based in Switzerland, after moving there from Bermuda in 2009. It was created in 2007, when Tyco split into three wholly separate businesses: Tyco Healthcare (now known as Covidien), Tyco Electronics and Tyco International.
