University of Houston lands wind energy grant
The University of Houston has landed a lofty $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The money will be used to construct a testing facility for offshore wind turbine materials and components.
UH officials hope the National Wind Energy Center, to be located at the UH Energy Research Park, will advance the school further in the ranks of energy research.
Part of the research will focus on developing newer and more affordable composite materials to build larger, longer-lasting turbines. Some blades could stretch beyond 70 meters and will need to survive harsh offshore environments, tropical storms and hurricanes.
