Burns & McDonnell wins work on project to link electric grids
Burns & McDonnell has landed engineering design and development support work for a transmission hub that will connect the nation’s three main electric transmission grids — a project with a total cost that has been reported around $1 billion.
Jeff Greig, Burns & McDonnell vice president, said in a release that the company is excited to be involved in "one of the most groundbreaking projects in power delivery in our generation."
Tres Amigas LLC, based in Santa Fe, N.M., and Kansas City-based Burns & McDonnell, which employs about 2,100 in the metro area, announced the selection on Monday. The Tres Amigas SuperStation in Clovis, N.M., will link the Eastern (Southwest Power Pool), Western (Western Electricity Coordinating Council) and Texas (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) Interconnections, helping improve the U.S. electricity network’s reliability and move clean energy among regions, according to a release.
Burns & McDonnell, which declined to disclose its fee, plans to immediately start work on conceptual engineering designs and system studies; construction is scheduled to start in 2012, and the project is expected to start commercial operations by 2014.
