Home Depot selling EcoSmart LEDs
The Home Depot Inc. is breaking out the LED.
The Atlanta-based home improvement retailer has started selling a proprietary brand of LEDs (light-emitting diodes) under the EcoSmart name. This includes a 40W equivalent bulb selling for $19.97 that has a 50,000 hour expected lifetime, making it the most affordable bulb of its kind in the market to date, Home Depot noted. By comparison, two years ago a 60-watt equivalent cost $90 and a 100-watt dimmable bulb went for $360.
Home Depot will also sell LED bulbs that support different types of fixtures such as accent lighting, track lighting, room lighting outdoor spotlights.
By 2012, the federal government will ban the making of certain forms of incandescent bulbs in the United States and by 2014 most incandescent bulbs will be discontinued. LEDs use up to 85 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and up to 50 percent less energy than compact fluorescent lamp bulbs without sacrificing light quality.
