Orion installs new urban wind turbine (Milwaukee)

About 40 people stood on a balcony at the Orion Energy Systems Inc. world headquarters Thursday as Manitowoc County’s first urban wind turbine was hoisted into position.

The 115-foot-tall wind turbine at Orion’s technology center is expected to generate up to 32 megawatt hours annually and will help offset energy consumed at the center, a statement from the company said.

The wind turbine was manufactured by Renewegy in Oshkosh.

The wind turbine is located less than a half-mile from Lake Michigan and has an average wind speed of 13 miles per hour. Electricity is produced at 7 miles per hour, the company statement said, noting that urban wind is the process of generating electricity through wind power to be used at an adjacent load center.
