Tesla Motors paid $275,000 fine to EPA
Electric sportscar maker Tesla Motors Inc. paid an “administrative penalty” of $275,000 to the Environmental Protection Agency in January because it lacked a required emissions certificate.
The Palo Alto business (NASDAQ: TSLA) needed a “Certificate of Conformity” from the EPA for its Roadster sportscars, of which it has so far sold about 1,200. Though it got the required document in 2008, it didn’t get one for 2009 until Dec. 21, according to a brief account on page 96 of its latest quarterly report.
No reason was given for why Tesla took so long to get the certificate.
In January, in a settlement with regulators, Tesla agreed to pay $275,000 for the oversight.
