IBM data center in RTP wins LEED gold
An IBM data center in Research Triangle Park has been awarded gold-level certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design certification program from the U.S. Green Building Council, the company announced Wednesday.
The data center, which opened in February, is IBM’s first LEED gold certified center. The $360 million data center was built in an old building on IBM’s Research Triangle Park campus. About 95 percent of the materials from the original building were recycled. The company also ensured that 25 percent of the newly purchased materials for the center came from recycled products.
Other environmentally friendly features for the facility include a rain water collection system used to supply non-potable water and cooling system that outside air instead of energy intensive chillers to cool the building for about half the year.
