Whole Foods enacts new packaging rules
Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market Inc. (Nasdaq: WFMI) is now enforcing new environmentally-minded packaging guidelines for its more than 2,100 body care and supplement suppliers.
The natural foods and products retailer kicked off the new rules by switching its store-brand body products to post-consumer recycled packaging. At the same time, the company created a forum for vendors to share best practices and find solutions together.
Whole Foods began working with suppliers on the plan in 2008, giving them until Sept. 1 this year to become compliant. The guidelines mandate suppliers reduce plastic in packing and switch to glass when possible. Materials must be easily reused or recycled, or use a high percent of post-consumer recycled materials.
Any product that is not in compliance was removed from the company's more than 300 locations internationally.
