University of Maryland goes solar
The University of Maryland in College Park will use a state grant to help fund the installation of one of the largest rooftop solar power systems in Maryland.
The university did not disclose the cost of the solar system, but says the grant comes from the Maryland Energy Administration, which named it a Project Sunburst Initiative Partner. Washington Gas Energy Services will finance the remainder of the project.
Rockville-based Standard Solar Inc. will install the 631 kilowatt system. It will be owned by Washington Gas Energy Services.
The university will buy electricity generated by the solar panels under a 20-year agreement with Washington Gas Energy Services.
