Boston efficiency startup takes $800K

Retroficiency Inc., a Boston startup that's developed energy efficiency software, said it has raised $800,000 in a funding round led by Worcester, Mass.-based World Energy Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: XWES)

Retroficiency says it offers a web-based software platform for analyzing the benefits of energy efficiency measures at commercial buildings. The platform is available to energy service companies, facility managers and large commercial property owners that want to discover energy efficiency solutions more quickly and cheaply, the company said.

World Energy Solutions, best known for running online exchanges for energy procurement and carbon emissions trading, said its "strategic investment" into Retroficiency comes in anticipation of accelerating demand for efficiency services at commercial buildings. The investment "opens the door to new opportunities for us in regulated markets," World Energy said.

The funding round also included participation from Jean Hammond and Jill Preotle, both early investors in Cambridge-based car sharing firm ZipCar Inc., Retroficiency said.
