Aerojet developing mobile biodiesel plants
Pursuing what could be a new line of business for Rancho Cordova-based Aerojet, company scientists are working to perfect small, automated biodiesel plants to make fuel.
The project, undertaken with a small Santa Barbara-based company called Biodiesel Industries, is a demonstration for the U.S. Navy, which wants an independent source of fuel.
The U.S. military is the world's largest consumer of diesel fuel. Creating fuel has been a national security issue for the military for years.
Small biodiesel units can be set up near raw materials, such as used cooking oil, plants or algae, to make transportation fuel for that region. In an advanced economy such as the U.S., that means that less fuel is wasted moving resources to huge refineries. In an undeveloped area, it allows for the creation of fuel and power using local resources.
